WHERE IS IT?

Our event starts alongside the Falkland Summer Festival and takes you around the beautiful surroundings of Falkland Estate. The start is just outside the festival. Both routes take you through the popular Red Squirrel Trail. The longer, 5km, route goes further into the Estate where there’s lots of new things to see on your way.

HOW FAR IS IT?

You can choose from two routes. The shorter route is only 3km (1¾ miles) long and is ideal for families or the less able. The longer route is 5km (3 miles) but is still suitable for almost everyone. The actual route you take is flexible - if you start the 5k, you’ll find lots of points where you can take a short-cut.

HOW MUCH TIME WILL IT TAKE?

That’s entirely up to you. It’s not a race! There’s no timing, and all we want you to do is complete the route. Most people will be able to do even the longer route comfortably within 1-2 hours. But you’ll have up to 4 hours, so you can be as fast or slow as you like.

SUCCEED

This event is designed for the community. Almost everyone will be able to get off the couch, participate, and get a real sense of achievement. Imagine collecting your medal as you finish! Even better - you don’t have to do it alone. Bring a friend or your whole family and get a little bit fitter together!

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE COMMUNITY WALK OR JOG EVENT.

It’s intended as a way of getting the community off the couch and become just a little bit more active!

WHO WON THE "GUESS THE NUMBER OF BEANS" COMPETITION?

The winner was Peter Branfield from Auchtermuchty. He was within a few beans of the actual number of 1338 beans. Good guess Peter. Thanks to everyone who entered - we appreciate your support, which really is valuable.

Nearly everyone has promised themselves that they’re going to get in shape. And they’re going to do it tomorrow, next week or next month. At "Get Fit Falkland", we’ve been encouraging ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

But not everyone has the time to dedicate to a programme of exercise. So we designed this event as a way to get off the couch for just a couple of hours. Get into the fresh air, enjoy the warmth, the sounds and the smells of summer and go back home with a real sense of achievement. And a medal!

We want you to come along and make your way around a route that takes you through the best that Falkland Estate has to offer. To take in the smells and sounds of the forest. To discover areas that you might never have seen before.

We won’t ask you to over-exert yourself, and you can choose just how much you want to do.

THE DATE

The event is taking place on Saturday 22nd June, alongside the Falkland Summer Festival.

THE ROUTES

There are two options, both on well-defined paths with plenty directions to guide you round:

  1. a shorter 3km (1¾ mile) option
  2. a longer 5km (3 mile) option

Everyone who enters will receive a full event pack, including detailed directions and a map of the routes. Each junction will have a number so that it will be very difficult to get lost. And we’ll have marshals at important points to show you where to go.

THE TREASURE TRAIL

The shorter route is perfect for kids, and we’ve added something extra just for them. When you register, you’ll get a "Treasure Trail" sheet. As you go round the route, look out for some items and work out answers to our clues. Answer them all, and collect a piece of gold from the Treasure Chest!

THE TIMES

This is definitely NOT a race. You don’t wear a number, you don’t have a mad rush over a start line, and you don’t even get a time. What you DO get is a well-planned event that you can be sure of completing, an experienced team to help you on your way, and a marvellous sense of achievement when you collect our specially designed medal when you cross the finish line.

START any time between noon and 2:30pm. Use the event to build up an appetite for the food stalls at the festival. Or come after indulging yourself and burn off the calories you just consumed!

FINISH any time before 4:00pm to qualify for our special medal.

DISABILTIES

We welcome entries from everyone, irrespective of ability. If you have an infirmity that makes it difficult for you to walk on uneven ground, the shorter route will be your better option. But you can do it twice. Or even, if you’re REALLY keen, three times! The shorter route is also suitable for wheelchair users, although there is a short hill and some help might be needed.

THE COST

Entries cost just £5 for individuals. Coming with a friend? It’s £9 for the two of you. And an entry for the whole family is only £14. [A family consists of up to two adults and up to two children over 10. Children under 10 go free. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult who has also entered the event.]

THE RULES

It’s not a race, so there are no rules. Just go over the start line between 12:00 and 2:30, and cross the finish by 4:00. That’s it.

What Should I Wear?

You don’t need anything fancy!

All you really need is a pair of well-fitting trainers and comfortable clothes - nothing too tight. Ideally, have a breathable top if it rains.

Is There A Minimum Age?

Yes - because of insurance limitations, entrants need to be at least 10 years old.

However, families with children under 10 are encouraged to bring them along for free. They’ll get a reward for going over the finishing line. If you’d like to give your youngster a medal, replicas will be available to buy at the registration desk.

Children between 10 and 16 can enter and fully participate as long as they are accompanied by an adult who has also entered the event.

And, of course, we have a special price for families who come along and enjoy an afternoon in Falkland - £14 for a family of up to two adults, plus 1 or 2 children between 10 & 16.

Can I Bring My Pet?

Of course you can!

Your well-behaved pet can accompany you. If it’s a dog, a few conditions apply. The person bringing the dog:

  • is solely responsible for it.
  • must ensure that it is kept under close control at all times
  • must ensure it does not alarm other people
  • must clean up after their dog at all times
  • must comply with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code as it applies to dogs

Incidents caused by dogs are not covered by our insurance. Therefore, it is very important that dog owners have their own Public Liability Insurance cover in place. This should include "Third Party Liability" insurance which pays towards compensation and costs awarded against the owner by a court if the dog causes death or injury to a person, or causes damage to someone else’s property. Many house insurance policies automatically provide this type of cover. We don’t need proof of insurance, but will ask for confirmation that you do have it.
